Quipu: The Alternative Language

Writing is a method of saving and transferring information in the form of symbols and numbers. When I first started singing my ABC's I had no idea what was the use of it. I knew that it was what the slightly older kids were doing in the school, singing songs and playing. So my eagerness to go to this "cool playing place" made me exhibit my ability to sing along. Sigh! Little did I know!

When I finally understood the purpose of alphabets, it amazed me that everything we say can be spelled out with those few letters. At first, I was a bit skeptical I decided to find the missing alphabets. Well! At least I tried ... I and my siblings, would sit and made gibberish noises and then try to spell those sounds. Every attempt was followed by giggles; it was a fun activity for us! Being bilingual, we had to try the same for the script of Hindi. However, I did not try this activity when I learned the script of Punjabi in fifth grade I assumed, as it was quite like Hindi, it will yield the same result.

As I grew a little bit older and had learned two lingual scripts, Hindi and English, I got obsessed with making my own language. Soon I realized it was a lot of work for a child, I had to put it aside and wait to grow up. Now that I am grown up, I am a bit busy with my project of world domination. Maybe after that, I would get on the pending job of coming up with my own language. So back in childhood, for the time being, for the purpose of having a secret language, I decided to assign numbers to alphabets and alphabets to numbers. In a way, I and my siblings had a coded secret language to leave messages for each other. Back then, we thought it was awesome! Of course, I wouldn't recommend it for some serious work as it was pretty easy to decipher.

When early human came up with scripts they had parallel symbols to represent objects and number. Those contrasting symbols evolved into alphabets and numbers respectively. They started with drawing objects that later turned into symbols via shorthand to save time. The purpose of writing was record keeping for the objects. The ancient people would draw the symbol of sheep and mark how many of those they have. It was a partial script they could not write plays and poetry with that. Language evolved out of that mode of record keeping. However, that was not the only mode of record keeping.

In the pre-Columbian Andes, they only used a partial script throughout their history. It was not suitable for writing stories; regardless those people were unfazed by its limitation. This partial script was very different from the written language. It was a method of saving information by knots on colourful chords. Those chords were called Quipus. They were made out of cotton or wool. Each quipu contained many chords and each chord contained knots at different places. There were variations in types of knots, colours, and locations of knots.

Under Inka Empire, the Quipus kept the record of all the data of the empire. It was a pretty sophisticated system. It was so accurate that after the Spanish conquest of Inka Empire the Spaniards kept on using this system. However, Spaniards did not know how to read and record the quipu. They depended on the locals for the record keeping. So for the security of the new empire, they slowly eliminated the quipus and used written language. Thus, eventually the art of quipu died and the recording and deciphering died. Find more information on Quipu here.

Written Language is too intuitive for us that saving information in the form of symbols seems to be the only option. It is quite efficient too and works wonderfully. We code the same information in binary and make it more efficient to transfer. However, thinking that there could have been some other form of keeping manuscripts and records is entrancing.

It is fascinating to me that there were alternatives to writing! Can you think of any cool ways we could be had to communicate information like the ancient Inka did with knots? If so, let me know.

    My Happy Places

Sometimes, like everyone else, I feel sad about a certain situation. As the day passes by, the feeling of sadness becomes a persistent emotion. On some of such days, when I finally find time to sit and address the emotion and console myself I find myself asking "So why were we sad for again?". Sometimes it turns out I had forgotten what exactly was the reason for that weary feeling of sorrow. Was is some news on the internet or was it something someone said... The origin of gloominess just slips out of my mind amidst of daily activities, but the cloud of sadness just remains to hover over my head.

I find such days quite ridiculous as the reason for the sorrow is not really significant, regardless my mind just picks up some random trigger and stomps as a stubborn child into the sombreness. On such days my salvage is some random things that by default makes me happy. So here I am sharing a few of such activities.

    Ukulele

It all started with when I first thought of including some music theory symbols in my paintings. However, I wanted to include something meaningful some part of classical symphonies that I like. So I started researching and educating myself about music theory. One thing leads to another and I ended up learning about how to play the Ukulele in theory. then on one fine day,  a couple of months back, I got this beauty. I had never actually played the instrument but had acquired all the basics on how to. It took me a while to get used to practically play it and I am still learning. Ever since that day playing uke is one of my favorite activities

    Coffee
I love coffee! There are about 3-4 different types of coffee sitting on a shelf in my room. Yes! I keep my exotic collection of coffee in my room along with my coffee mugs. I like to think of it as this mini collection, like some people have for their fancy drinks, a mini bar. Well, coffee has the ability to make you happy. Curling up on a cozy couch to read and sip coffee is one of my absolute favorite things. You can find more about coffee on my post here.

    Reading
Reading is food for my mind. I cannot imagine how my life would be if I wouldn't read. There is no denying that reading helps you be more informed on a various range of topics. One learns about the universe and its laws, addressing the mere passion of unraveling the quest of human existence. One of the most pressing existential question of humanity gets assuages, maybe just a little bit via reading. It lowers the stress level and increases the focus. However, more than anything it makes one compassionate. It gives one a unique ability to step in someone else's shoes and see the world through their eyes. I like to read a huge range of genres. (You can find more about my reading habits on Goodreads here).

    Hamilton
No matter how my mood is, if I play Hamilton- the musical I will somehow turn into an all-in-one cast and will be rapping with diligence. I never get tired of it. I can listen to it, again and again ... The beauty of it is not just the predominantly hip-hop music, but also Lin-Manuel Miranda's brilliant art of storytelling. In telling the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America's founding father, Lin puts forward all the admirable qualities along with the flaws of the characters, this approach makes historic figures seem more human. The contemporary hip language makes one able to understand them as per today's standards. Last but not the least, it's the most entertaining history lesson.

    Painting
I like to create art in many different forms, but oil paints are one of my favorite artistic expression. I can forget the existence of the world when I am lost in my attempt to make that one stroke right. I don't give any care even if it's apocalypses outside my window. It is my personal trance. I dedicated a whole post to painting. Read about it here.

Now, what about you ... Do you feel remorse and forget what it was for? What is your Happy Place? Let me know in the comment section.

Goals Of Art: L'art pour L'art

Creating art is cathartic. Our daily life is filled with the beating of routine in a certain fashion. The daily schedule and keeping up with it somehow diminishes the human essence that is essential for emotional well-being. At a point, the daily life monotonous and devoid of emotion needs purging and my art is my refuge.

I have a keen curious way of reasoning that leads me to try to find out more things about the world be it Science, Art, History, Politics, etc.  In this pursuit of knowledge, I find myself in a position where I form my own opinions and I am grateful for that. I personally cannot find harmony in accepting what I am being told. I need to investigate. Taking up Ideas as heredity is not in my book. It is like being robbed of what makes us human. Namely, thinking, reasoning, creating and finding solutions to intricate problems.

I like to create art in many different forms but oil paints are one of my favorite artistic expression. I can forget the existence of the world when I am lost in my attempt to make that one stroke right. I don't give any care even if it's apocalypses outside my window. It is my personal trance. The process of painting is not only where my mind finds solace, but it also helps me learn patience. It helps me to appreciate things that we often just walk by without noticing. I pay attention to the visual inputs in daily life to try to accommodate it in my next painting. There is so much it makes me notice, but most of all it helps me to try become a better version of myself.

I paint, mostly with the backdrop of some symphony by Mozart, occasionally some podcast. As I paint I am in my own mind rummaging thought and ideas along with getting that brush stroke just right or least satisfactory. Each of my painting is a safe keeping for the thoughts that crossed my mind. It is an accumulation of emotions that I am reminded of when I look at them, almost like a secret language that only I decipher.

Art is an answer to our existential crisis. Art is an emotion but it is not just that ... Art can be a means of improvement. Art can be employed in social and political reforms, as it has been in history. Being able to attract attention gives it the power to direct attention to an issue. Isn't this what we see in protests with signs and performance arts!

It happens quite often when you look at some picture or a painting and it gives you an uncomfortable feeling. Something that makes you rummage through your soul to identify and uncover. That is the power of art. Art is not just pretty landscapes, rainbows and butterflies. It is also the difficult issues and questions that we shove under the rug to get rid of. It may or may not be the intent of artists to question the observer. Every piece of art is created with some unique circumstances and that adds to its meaning and beauty.

Throughout the human civilization, people have expressed their feelings in the various form of arts. Every culture produces artifacts. It is present in museums tourist destinations. It's what is common among all the humans irrespective of geographical locations. Moreover, one can appreciate art better if I know the underlining circumstances of it, craftsmanship required and political/social implication of it.

It is the very thing that set us apart for all the organisms on the planet. In fact, even amongst all the other homo genus (Neandertals, Denisovan, etc) artifacts were exclusive to the Homo Sapiens. Throughout history, humans have left an exclusive mark on Earth in forms of artifacts, that are impressively intricate. Art is not just the production of an object art is purging of the soul.

Art has a place in all of us. So what is your account of art?  Do you enjoy creating or appreciating art? How does Art make you feel? Let me know in the comment section.
